Empress of Biz, Biz Tips: Technology changes ...where is my Abacus?

Technology changes...30 plus years

Just thinking about technology...the tool I love and hate to use. It is the big game changer in my 30+ year of owning a business.  In the old days we used an abacus..ancient chinese adding machine....just kidding.  What a fantastic change .  Now we have the cloud, laptops, I-pads, cell phone, pc, printers, copiers, scanners, websites, conference calls  Google, Amazon, Aol, Facebook etc etc...
All making a dramatic impact on the way we think, act and do business. So much beeps, squeaks, rings all over the place.  The investment in my small business in equipment is significant...and grows every year.
Along the way I also became a co-developer of a software program (very expensive) Price it Perfect (tm) and now I am a talkcaster (podcaster)The Empress of Biz, Listen, Learn, Listen  using the internet to share ideas, business tips and opinions   Who would of though..now back to my abacus.
PS.  Check your insurance policy make sure all the above gadgets are protected...it can be very costly if you do not have the right protection and backup plans.

EMPRESS OF BIZ! Listen! Learn! Prosper! - Stupid Mistakes Biz Owners Make

EMPRESS OF BIZ! Listen! Learn! Prosper! - Live & Recorded Episodes:

Mistakes happen in business. Some minor..some major. Some you recover from...others you do not! Today we discuss the TEN STUPID MISTAKES you can AVOID that will SINK your business. Today's show on the EMPRESS OF BIZ is VITAL to all business owners..... Knowledge is POWER and can Prevent DISASTER if you use it. Join me today as I share from my 30 plus years experience as a business owner, business growth specialist, teacher, mentor and MISTAKE MAKER. My lessons could be the difference between SUCCESS, HEARTBREAK, FAILURE and Bankruptcy Court . Listen, Learn and Prosper with the Empress of biz...JoAnn R. Forrester.

One mistake I wish I did NOT make:
1.   Start a business without any idea what I was doing.  I was so frustrated with my job and personal life.. I was looking for anything that would get me out.  So of course,  when that opportunity came to start a business with two others who I looked up to...I JUMPED.  I thought everything would be perfect.  Nope! Not the best decision in the world.  While I had some skills I did not know anything about business structure, costs or taxes etc.  I just trusted the older members and did what they said.  Sometimes it worked out...other times it did not.  It took me years to gain their respect and not be treated like a kid.
Lesson Learned:   Think before you leap....Learn as much as you can BEFORE you start...and KEEP on learning...and do not allow yourself to be patronized and treated like the "kid" on the block.

Empressofbiz, Biz Tips. Are you Listening?

Sunday Morning Reflection:

This week as I listened, observed and worked with businesses it came to me that many of our problems occur because ....we are so busy telling people what to do and thinking of the next thing ...we miss what is going around us.

Non-listening creates a great deal of frustration and alienation with employees, associates, vendors, friends and loved ones. By our non-listening we tell them they are not important.

Take a deep breath, slow down and be quiet for a minute. Stop the chatter in your head and just breathe and focus on the moment...and then start to communicate with people. You may be surprised at what you hear and learn that will eventually improve your business and life.

Make it a good week folks and give the gift of listening.

Thanksgiving Thoughts :
When you are in business you have a tendency to feel alone....after all you are the one who is responsible for... well everything. Even if you have employees...you are still the one that as President Harry Truman stated, "The buck stops here." And that is at it should be.

The BONUS is the friends you make along the way. Fellow business owners who share with you, associates who help and customers who are loyal.

Today I am thankful for all those who have been my friends, associates, business partners and clients. Thank you for being there and thank you for still being there after all these years.

 Special Thanks to the Following:
Joanne Quinn Smith of Positively Pittsburgh Live
Jill Kummer of Blacktie Pittsburgh,
Donna Baxter ofThe Soul Pitt
Allen Levine of Pittsburgh Sportsline
Ola Jackson of OWN
Diane Daniels of DID Associates
Ruth Byrd Smith, Director of Allegheny County M/W/DBE Department

Thank you for everything you do to help small business.  Happy Thanksgiving.

EmpressofBiz, Biz Tips Happy Veterans Day...Hire a Vet..it is good for business.

Best wishes for those who have served in the U. S. Armed Forces.  Below is a picture taken in the late summer of 1941 of my Dad, Mother and his 3 brothers.  Dad bottom left, Uncle Joe, the Youngest bottom right, Grandma in the middle, Uncle Puffy upper left and Uncle Ralph upper right
This was several months before Pearl Harbor.  The country was recovering from the Great Depression and was looking forward to better times.  No one wanted to go to war...but they did when the call came.  All four served in the Armed Forces.  My Dad was a marine, my Uncle Puffy was a paratrooper, Uncle Ralph Army MP, and Uncle Joe Army.  Two of them were involved in D-Day in Normandy.  They did what had to be done and then came home and built our country.  There all gone now...but I remember them always in my heart.

Empress of biz, Biz Tips! Baby Boomers are Doing it Again...Leading the Way into a New Economy!

Baby Boomers are doing it again…leading the way.

JoAnn R. Forrester, Empress of Biz.

If you are a baby boomer and getting ready to retire and think you have more dreams to accomplish, and one of them is starting your own business, you are not alone!

Contrary to popularly held assumptions, it turns out that over the past decade or so, the highest rate of entrepreneurial activity belongs to the 55-64 age group: reported the Kauffman Foundation, which promotes entrepreneurship. The 20-34 age bracket, meanwhile, which is usually identified with swashbuckling and risk-taking youth (think Facebook and Google), has the lowest.

The outlook is great for us Baby Boomers.  We are 78 million strong and we have money to spend. And we do!  At the rate of 3.5 trillion dollars a year.  So as we leap into the next phase of our lives, especially if it is entrepreneurship, I have some advice to share from my own experiences.

One of the things you will need  is a completely different attitude about your new job. If you have been an employee all your life, especially with major corporations, there are many things you may be unprepared for.   You are responsible for everything.  You wear multiple hats.  One minute you’re the boss, then salesperson, bookkeeper, production worker and then at the end of the day, janitor.    Forty hour week? Nope.. Always a paycheck?  No. Enough said. Always someone to take your place if you want a break or are sick.  NO!  Customer’s to please? Always!    Hard decisions to make?  Yep. It’s you.  Money? It  is yours. Not someone else’s.

Another big hurdle you have to face  is your  family.   Your life will change and the people around you are not always going to understand.  They may not be prepared for the sacrifice, money and time, you will be making. Be prepared for them to be helpful or resentful.

It is important for you to do a great deal of planning, thinking and talking to eliminate friction BEFORE you start your business.  Make sure you have that “financial talk” before you start.  Whether you borrow from the bank or use your own money you are taking a financial risk, which may not be tolerated by all.

I suggest you find a small business to work in, volunteer your time and experience what life is about in the business fast lane before you jump.   Talk to other business owners and ask the hard questions that you want answered. The great thing it is yours and this new venture may be the best of all...just get ready for the ride of your life.   Good luck fellow boomer! May your business dreams be an economic boom for us all.

EmpressofBiz, Biz Tips..Sunday morning reflection Strengths vs Weakness

Sunday Morning Reflection:

One of the things I found over the years of dealing with small business owners and myself...our biggest strengths can become our biggest obstacle. Sometimes we need help in finishing a project and do not ask... thus creating delays and bad feelings. Or we need to admit that we do not know how to do something (tough one for me), and we plow ahead and create a mess for ourselves and our customers.

Coming to terms with ourselves ... and how we can make sure our strengths remain an asset.. and not be a hindrance... is an important task on the way to business success.

Make it a great week folks...you can do it...just make sure you ask for help when you need it.

EmpressofBiz, Biz Tips Who is going to be the boss in the second generation family business?

WHO IS GOING TO BE THE BOSS?

JoAnn R. Forrester aka the Empressofbiz

For the last two columns we have been discussing the issues involved in passing the business on to the next generation.  If you have more than one heir, how do you do it so the company and the family prospers?  How do you do it so it is collaboration? A combined team effort? Not an intense internal rivalry.

Let’s take a look at one example.  One business,   ABC Hauling and Transportation Inc., has four potential “presidents”, three males and a female.  The parents started the business 35 years ago.  The business has grown to a multi- million dollar plus business with 65 rigs on the road with a large parts department which serves smaller trucking  outfits

The parents early on decided to train all the children in the business. From  office to sales, to garage to parts,  to dispatch to driving, they were trained.  They all went to college, prepared for business and were required to spend time working elsewhere.

Now it is decision time.  Do they  make  decision by the traditional methods, oldest male gets the job? Or do they you consider all the members? Of course, today all the members include daughters.  One of the most recent trends is the amount of daughters who are taking over their family business.  Now according to the SBA women account for 12% of all family firm leader and increase of 40% since 1996.

At this critical juncture, outside guidance was sought.  An overview of the business was conducted, the financial strength, the market, assessment of its personnel, the market, and skills needed to guide the business through the change and beyond.  What soon became apparent was that three of the adult children wanted to be part of the daily business and one did not.  Of the remaining three, each one had talents, skills and interests that were different yet combined made a great team.  So who was going to be the “boss”?

After much internal debate, the sister, Janet, was picked to be president.  Why? Because she was the one who was able to bring everyone together and get decisions made without major conflict.  She also had a strong set of skills in financial management and at this time in the economy the family felt that was essential. And in family of dog lovers...had the smartest dog!

They also  decided to limit the term of president of the company to five years. This allows them to change leadership if needed to meet changing market conditions.  The company is now is in its third year of transition and is stable and prosperous.

What has made this second generation transition successful?  Early planning and preparation were the foundation for a succession transition.  They concentrated on teamwork, training, business education and outside experience.  They were also willing to look beyond the traditional answers to solve their problems. Early preparation, education, outside experience, teamwork and non-traditional thinking are the keys to making the second generation leap a success.

Empressofbiz, Biz tips: Family owned businesses...beating the odds

   Growing the Family Business…
Beating the odds!
JoAnn R. Forrester

Did you know that over 70% of family owned business want their busienss to  continue to the next generation  Yet, according to the Small Business Administration only 30% percent of family owned business make it to the next generation.

Why? What  happened? And what can be done to change the outcome? It is frustrating to watch a good business go down.   All the time, effort  and resources it took to build…and then its gone.

Some Family Owned businesses close voluntarily because the next generations do not want to take them over…they were the parents dream and not theirs.

Others close because due to the lack of  proper financial and business planning to pay taxes and cover the business during the transition.

A  Family owned business may limp along with disinterested owners and eventually has to be sold at a value significantly lower than its prosperous days.

Fourth:   One issue that is hard to face and yet is the key to a successful transition is the “ talent pool.”  Do your heirs  have what it  takes to be the boss?  They may be willing, but lack the capability and personality  to be the CEO.  Or, if other family members  are involved, he or she lacks the ability to work as a team. We all know FOB’S that have failed due to the inability of the family members not willing to separate the personal issues  from the business.

If the FOB wants to continue a succession plan, both financial and personal development  must be in place EARLY.  Training of family members can begin young.  Being in business should be seen as fun…not a drudgery.

I know one FOB who takes her daughter to the “shop” once a week and her job is to greet customers and make sure they are comfortable in the waiting room.  She gets paid to work that day…and at 10 years of age she is already coming up with suggestions on how to treat the customers.  And her ideas are considered and a few have been implemented.

The two E’s are important.  Education and experience elsewhere is essential.   It allows them to see how businesses operate elsewhere and then they can bring in fresh ideas to the business.

Long range planning is essential  for a family owned busienss to succeed to the next generation.  More on this on upcoming  columns.
