Selena’s debut book, The Next Generation of Women Leaders (Praeger, 2009), is the career guidebook she always wished she’d had but could never find. A major underpinning of her book is the 30+ interviews she conducted with c-level women around the country. Selena wrote Next Generation while pursuing her MBA at Johns Hopkins, where she graduated first in her class. Selena also holds a Masters degree in social work from NYU. Talking points:
Learn how Selena focused her passion on emerging women leaders and what she’s learned from the executives she interviewed, the women she’s coached, and the audiences she’s spoken to around the country.
Selena, it sounds like you’re thriving -- and passionate about helping others to do so. How did you get to this point?
·
What excited you about women and leadership? Why this topic?
· You present around the country all the time―at places like Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Princeton…what kind of response have you gotten from the female audiences you’ve presented to?
· What barriers remain for women who want to lead in the business world?
· Given these barriers, what are you trying to achieve?
· Why do you think there still is a pay gap in the salaries of male and female leaders?
· You talk a lot in your book about how important it is for women to make their career aspirations known, and above all else to ASK. How would you coach someone through making a request?
· What should women avoid doing at work?
· Can you talk about the challenges women face in achieving the work-life balance?
· What advice can you offer to a professional who wants to differentiate herself and stand out on the job?
· What would you say the one defining experience in your journey has been that made the difference in your success?
· What has been vital in keeping you afloat?
· Selena, how can we “pay it forward” for women just coming up?
· So clearly, women are rallying around this and your book’s repeatedly been #1 on Amazon in its category. Why is this striking a chord with women?
· How has the process of writing this book and finding your core passion changed you?

EmpressofBiz Interviews Grace Robinson Insurancetips

Grace Robinson an award winning business woman and community champion was the guest on the Empress of Biz Thursday show at 8am. Grace talked about the need for business insurance, what kind, when you need it , the cost, and what you need to do to make sure you are properly covered. She also stressed the difference between "family insurance..that which you need to take care of family needs versus business needs. Too many people make the mistake of mixing them and not having sufficient coverage to take care of the family when a crisis needs. Some of the business insurance needs include, liability insurance, vehicle insurance, worker's compensation, property and casualty. The amount of insurance needed in a business depends on the type of business you have it, the debt you have, long term commitments, partners, risk, inventory needs plus many other factors. To determine your need it is important to review and discuss your with your agent twice a year. Home based business owners are not properly covered under their home owners policy..this can be disastrous mistake a business owner makes. For further information and a business insurance check list you can contact Grace Robinson at the Grace Robinson Insurance Agency at 412-682-7383 or go to her webiste at www.gracerobinson.com

Empress of Biz Talks to Greg Panza of the Mt. Washington CDC.
Partnerships between businesses and government are vital in restoring and revitalizing and enhancing a neighborhood business District. As a board member of the Urban Redevelopment Authority Business Loan Review Board I can how the combination of public and private resources can dramatically help businesses grow and neighborhoods flourish. This morning guest, Greg Panza, program manager of the Mount Washington Community Development Corporation an agency that serves the Mt. Washington and Duquense Highest communities.

One of the assets of Mt Washington is Grandview Avenue. It is a street known by many people locally, nationally, and internationally due to its speculator view of Pittsburgh. Over a million people a year come to MT. Washington to view the city. Grandview is high up on a bluff looking over the city where you can see a majestic view that goes for miles. I have a special place in my heart for Mt Washington. My father and his brothers were raised there. And as a little girl I spent many vacation and holiday days at my Grandmothers. My favorite pastime was riding the incline…going up and down, up and down, the conductors knew me by name. Once I rode it 11 times. I have many fond memories of the area. But lets talk about today and what it happening now to expand and revitalize the area.

Good morning Greg and welcome to the Empress of Biz. One of the interesting things about Greg is his profession he has traveled extensively nationally and internationally. After touring the world he decided to come back “Home” and be part of our continuing Renaissance
Greg Panza

Since 2005, Greg’s primary role at the MWCDC has been the management of the Main Street Program, which has achieved exceptional results for this community.

Mt Washington CDC
Mission & Vision
Our mission is to balance area development, highlight the area's unique natural and historic features, and enhance the well-being of the people who live, work and visit here.
Our shared vision is Mount Washington/Duquesne Heights as someplace unique and attractively natural; a diverse and neighborly community that is a comfort to live in; a lush, verdant showcase for land preservation, smart development and features seen nowhere else in the world.

Projects & Programs
Business Development
MWCDC’s business district development efforts have primarily been focused on the low to moderate census tract serving business district segments of Shiloh Street, Virginia Avenue, Southern Avenue, Boggs Avenue and Bailey Avenue. These efforts are funded as one of 12 neighborhoods in the City of Pittsburgh by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Pittsburgh’s Mainstreets Pittsburgh Program. This program was developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a way to revitalize traditional business districts across the country that experienced a decline in the late 20th century with the rise of suburban shopping centers, and big box retailers. It is based on the four points of Organization, Design, Promotion and Economic Restructuring. The Main Street program, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, is managed by the Pennsylvania Downtown Center which is funded by the PA Department of Community and Economic Development. The MWCDC works closely together with these entities and the URA to ensure the success of Mount Washington’s Main Street Program.
Since the MWCDC Main Street Program was awarded funding in 2006, there has been over $2 million re-invested into Mount Washington’s Main Street area. This figure includes the renovation of a dozen storefronts, the opening of 13 new businesses, the creation of over 30 jobs, and multiple public space improvement projects.
For further information on locating your business to Mt. Washington give Greg Panza a call at 412-481-3220 extension 203.

1. Title and brief summary of the topic
Keeping Pace with Marketing in the Digital Age
Cathy von Birgelen, Director
eMarketing Learning Center @ eBizITPA

¨ Ninety-five percent of business-to-business buyers go online and use search engines during the purchasing process
¨ Ninety-two percent of adults regularly go online when considering a purchase
¨ Eighty percent of Internet users in America shop online
¨ Thirty-two percent of online visitors go to social media sites

Today’s businesses are beginning to realize that they are limited in their use of e-marketing techniques that are becoming so vital especially in today’s highly competitive global market.

The online industry continues to grow at a rapid pace and unless marketers are actively engaging in e-marketing and staying in touch with the emerging technologies and evolving strategies, they will continue to fall further and further behind.

Cathy will provide insight on the powerful impact the internet has had on business and the economy. Helping you understand the importance of e-marketing and how it works in the marketing mix. She will also address the growing need for business marketers who possess the knowledge and capabilities to effectively apply new media marketing for business success and how to acquire those skills.
